Roughly 16,000 people are born with ichthyosis each year and with at least 30 known variations, symptoms can range from mild to severe. There are no known cures and symptoms are generally present at birth. Ichthyosis requires an intensive daily hygiene and moisturizing routine to clean and protect the skin, and it can impact mobility.
It is important to raise awareness for this disease, the accommodations it requires, and its impact on affected individuals and communities.
Ichthyosis has never been positively represented in narrative media. In fact, in 2023, Indian action-thriller, Gandeevadhari Arjuna, actively dehumanized children with ichthyosis and used unpermitted images of individuals affected by the condition.

A petition with 12,000+ signatures called Netflix to remove the film from their platform, stating:
By supporting Miss Matched,
you're championing inclusivity and advocacy to improve lives affected by ichthyosis and related skin types.
Miss Matched will be the first positive representation of ichthyosis in narrative film. This story will educate audiences on the realities of living with the condition, building empathy and awareness for those affected.
By bringing ichthyosis to the forefront, we can increase fundraising initiatives for medical research to find better treatments and cures that make life with ichthyosis more comfortable.
Men die by suicide 3.9x more than women. Through Logan and his friends, we learn about the challenges men face when it comes to mental and emotional health concerns stemming from disability, divorce, grief, body image, etc.

We hope that Miss Matched becomes the first of many stories told of and by those with underrepresented disabilities.
Breaking Stereotypes: Positive portrayals of characters with conditions like ichthyosis challenge stereotypes and misconceptions, fostering a more nuanced understanding among audiences.
Empowering Communities: When marginalized communities see themselves authentically represented on screen, it instills a sense of pride and belonging, fostering greater self-esteem and societal acceptance.
Enriching Culture: Diverse representation enriches storytelling, offering audiences a broader perspective of the human experience and promoting cultural exchange and understanding.

Note: While we are allies of the Autism community, the use of puzzle pieces in branding for Miss Matched is not intended to provide commentary in any way on the Autism community. Historically, colorful puzzle pieces have been used as a symbol for the Austism community. These days, however, the Autism community stands divided on the subject. We believe every person on the Autism spectrum inherently has a place in our society just as they are -- a perfect fit.
